Crucify Him

By Kyle Blackwell

As we approach Easter season, I am reminded of one particular event leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion that is always talked about. Oh how quick we are to judge, not even realizing our own imperfections.

They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee. -Matthew‬ ‭21‬:‭7‬-‭11

The city of Jerusalem was in an uproar, praising the coming King. They all had a Spirit of thanksgiving. That was, of course, until a few days‬ later when they were shouting, “crucify Him”.

The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” And he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!” -Matthew‬ ‭27‬:‭21‬-‭23‬

Even the disciples of Jesus lacked faith in His Kingship. Most of them ran away, while Peter openly denied his Master before men. Even though His followers did not ask for Christ to be crucified, they exemplified their lack of faith within their own actions.

While it sounds insane that the same people who praised this Holy man in the streets wanted Him dead, and nothing to do with Him, only a few days later, I believe every one of us have shown our lack of faith in Christ many times. I always say that these guys were better than me. There have been many times in the past, prior to surrendering my life to Christ, where I didn’t wait a few days to deny Christ, but it was just a few minutes after leaving church when I started going back to my worldly life.

I believe some of the Israelites were disappointed when they saw Jesus riding on a donkey, because they were looking for the one to come save Israel, a warrior, to lead them back to prosperity, but what they got was the Savior for the entire world. Moreover, He came into Jerusalem on a donkey, but He is coming back on a white horse as stated in Revelation 19.

There are many important pieces to the Easter story, and this is one I believe we can all improve upon. Remember, our faith is not rooted in our beliefs only, but also in our actions.

-My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge -Hosea 4:6
