Power of the Blood
By Kyle Blackwell
Lewis Edgar Jones wrote many songs during his lifetime with the most famous being, There is Power in the Blood of the Lamb. It is a beautiful song with sound doctrine that accurately highlights what the Blood of Jesus truly does when a full submission and repentance is gifted in the life of a believer. I think that American Christianity focuses a lot on how to be happy while getting their ticket to Heaven. However, rather than focusing on Heaven, God wants us to have a relationship with Him. It is only through that relationship and our reliance in Him that true sanctification is revealed throughout our life with Jesus.
Sanctification is something that is a process. While I truly believe that being fully sanctified is something one will only achieve when in Heaven, I also believe that the road to sanctification is a very narrow path. And it is only on that narrow path that we will have an unearned privilege to enter the pearly gates.
On the face of it you may think I’m talking about works. No! I’m not talking about works. Even Jesus said that not only is the gate narrow, but so is the path. And there are many roads; however, only one road leads to Heaven. The road to sanctification is a road that can only be traveled with the guidance of Holy Spirit. As a man I am wicked. I want to do worldly things. I desire to do what pleases me. And it is only through Christ Jesus that I want to do what is pleasing in the sight of the Lord.
All this is possible through what Jesus did on that old rugged cross. There truly is power, power, wonder working power in the precious blood of the lamb. And what amazing Grace that God has poured out into my life through the blood of Jesus. Do you really want to try and grasp the true power of Jesus’ blood?
“When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. -Colossians 2:13-15
The blood of Jesus covers all our sin. The blood of Jesus rids ourselves of addiction. The blood of Jesus breaks strongholds. The blood Jesus shed made a public spectacle of the powers and authorities of this wicked world. Do you know what powers and authorities Paul is talking about in this passage? He is talking about demons. He is talking about the devil. Let me tell you something. If you are not worshiping Christ as Lord and Savior over your life, you are worshiping the devil. Well, how can you say that? It’s fairly simple to me. The only difference between someone who does not follow Christ and a devil worshipper is that the devil worshipper knows whom he is worshiping.
The good thing is that Christ put an end to all the devil’s charades when He shed His blood. I love how Paul states in verse 13 that I was once dead in my sins but I am now made alive in Christ. Jesus died so that we may live.
Jesus literally gave His life so that we can be made whole, so that we can be transformed, so that we can be set free, so that we can be healed of all wrongdoing, so that we can be forgiven, so that we can forgive, so that we can love.
More important than getting into Heaven, as that is really just a bonus in all this, we are brought back into the image of God that He originally created us to be. Because of His blood that covers our lives, we are able to have an abundant and fruitful life through a loving relationship with Jesus Christ. And it is that relationship that truly transforms us. The blood changes our direction while the relationship leads us down the road to sanctification. If one is focused on whether or not they’re getting into Heaven, I will say that they are missing the point of it all. I cannot wait to get to Heaven, but this relationship I have with Jesus trumps all else.
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge -Hosea 4:6
